All 9 people onboard a NORTHEAST SHUTTLES Cessna 208B Grand Caravan were injured today, when the aircraft overran the runway upon landing in Mizoram, India. The injuries are said to be non-life threatening and all are reported to be in stable condition in hospital.
The Caravan, registration VT-NES, was on Domestic Service from Imphal to the Aizwal/Lengpui Airport in Mizoram, India, with 8 passengers and the Pilot onboard. According to media reports, the aircraft overshot the runway, apparently due to strong winds, and fell into a brook after hitting the Instrumental Landing System. The reports also said that visiblity was stated to be around 2,000 metres, 500 below the permitted norm. However, the Pilot reportedly claimed that permission was taken under the Special Visibility Flight rules and a visual landing was attempted. The Caravan suffered substantial damages in the accident and may need to be written off. Aviation officials in India have opened an investigation.
