AVIATION NEWS BRIEFS

NEWS
*Boeing has received 8 new orders this week for Boeing 777 aircraft from customers not yet disclosed. This takes their net orders to 117 aircraft for the year, 56 of which are 777s.
 
*BRITISH AIRWAYS and the Unite union have reached an agreement to resolve their long-running cabin crew dispute. The agreement will be put to a ballot by cabin crew over the next month.
 
*A UK government Report concluded that London Heathrow Airport was not prepared to cope with last December’s snow and its owner, BAA, failed to invest in sufficient snow equipment, despite the fact that winter 2010-11 was the UK’s 3rdcoldest and severest winter in succession. The Report, prepared by the Transport Select Committee, analyzed the impact of the winter weather in December 2010. Several Airports in the country closed for a time following the snowfall, but the “most significant” was the closure of LHR from December 18 to 20.
 
*AIR BERLIN reported a loss of €120.6 million ($159.8 million) for the 1st quarter ended March 31, significantly widened from a deficit of €93.6 million in the year-ago period. The carrier said results were impacted by "political upheaval in North Africa" and the timing of the Easter holiday in the 2nd quarter as well as by rising oil prices.
 
*SINGAPORE AIRLINES has reported a S$1.09 billion ($876 million) fiscal full-year net profit, compared with the previous year's S$216 million net profit which was hit by fines against SIA CARGO. SIA also said it plans to decommission all 7 of its Boeing 747-400s and 5 Boeing 777s by March 2012 as it takes delivery of 8 more Airbus A380s.
 
INVESTIGATIONS
*The German BFU has released a Bulletin in regards to LUFTHANSA CITYLINE Flight 2364, a CRJ900 that rejected takeoff from the runway08R  from Munich, Germany, on March 8, 2011, due to 2 helicopters being in vicinity of their runway. The Bulletin describes the incident, but offers no conclusions. The BFU has closed the investigation.
 
*The German BFU has released a Bulletin in regards to ALITALIA EXPRESS Flight 472, an ERJ145 that suffered a serious runway incursion by a EUROWINGS BAe 146, at Dusseldorf, Germany, on February 6, 2007. Due to multiple errors by controllers and Pilots, the Eurowings aircraft passed over the Alitalia aircraft at a height of 50 feet, as it departed Dusseldorf. The Bulletin describes the incident, but offers no conclusions. The BFU has closed the investigation.
 
INCIDENTS
MAY 13
*AMERICAN EAGLE Flight 4349: The ERJ145 diverted to Toronto, ON, Canada, due to a hot electrical smell in the passenger cabin.
*ATLAS AIR Flight 7583: The Boeing 747 Cargo aircraft, on service for QANTAS, returned to Sydney, Australia, after the crew could not retract the landing gear.
 
MAY 12
*DELTA AIRLINES Flight 552: The Boeing 737 clipped the tail of DELTA AIRLINES Flight 566, also a Boeing 737, on the taxiway at Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. Both planes suffered minor damage, however no one onboard was injured. The FAA is investigating.
*AER ARANN Flight 3612: The ATR72, on service for AER LINGUS, returned to Shannon, Ireland, due to an unspecified technical problem.
*SAS Flight 4031: The Boeing 737 returned to Oslo, Norway, due to smoke in the cockpit, which led to a cracked cockpit windshield. An investigation has been launched.
*EUROLOT Flight 3806" The ATR42 returned to Rzeszow, Poland, after the crew shut down an engine while on their initial climb.
*BUDAPEST AIR SERVICE Flight 850: The E120, on service for MALEV HUNGARIAN AIRLINES, returned to Budapest, Hungary, due to cabin pressure problems.
*UNI AIRWAYS Flight 806: The MD90, on service for EVA AIRWAYS, veered right off the runway and impacted 4 runway edge lights, upon landing in Taipei, Taiwan. The aircraft was damaged and is undergoing damage assessment. Taiwan's Aviation Safety Council has opened an investigation.
 
MAY 11
*CONTINENTAL AIRLINES Flight 12: The Boeing 737 struck a bird upon landing at Los Angeles, Calfornia. The FAA reported the nose gear wheel well was damaged.
 
MAY 7
*AIR CANADA Flight 678: The crew of the ERJ175 declared PAN for landing in Halifax, NS, Canada, due to multiple problems with its flaps.
 
MAY 6
*SKYWEST Flight 6730: The CRJ200, on service for UNITED AIRLINES, suffered multiple bird strikes on its initial climb out of Winnipeg, MB, Canada. The crew returned for a safe landing. The aircraft suffered substantial damages, with the right hand engine being repaired in Winnipeg, before the CRJ was ferried to Salt Lake City, Utah, for further repairs.
 
APRIL 29
*EASYJET Flight 983: The A319 suffered a burst left hand main gear tire upon landing in Venice, Italy. The Airbus was ferried to Zurich, Switzerland, on May 1, and remains on the ground there today, May 13, undergoing repairs. Italy's ANSV said tire fragments damaged the left hand wing and left hand flaps. The ANSV has opened an investigation.
