AVIATION/ AIR ICELAND Q100 RUNS OFF RUNWAY IN NUUK

A FLUGFELAG AIR ICELAND Dash 8-100 suffered substantial damages when it overran the runway while landing in strong and gusty winds in Nuuk, Greenland, yesterday, March 4. According to media reports, Flight 223 from Reykjavik, Iceland, to Nuuk, had been delayed for over 24 hours due to poor weather in Nuuk. The Q100 finally departed Reykjavik at 10:40am yesterday, and then was diverted to Kulusuk, Greenland, due to the weather worsening once again in Nuuk. Shortly thereafter, the weather improved in Nuuk, thus the Dash departed Kulusuk. At 1:00pm, the aircraft was on finals into Nuuk in difficult and gusty wind conditions, as seen in top photo. Upon touchdown, the right hand main gear reportedly collapsed and the aircraft veered right off the runway 23. The Dash rolled over snow covered covered before striking a rocky embankment and coming to a stop. The 31 passengers and 3 crew members then evacuated the aircraft and were transported to the terminal for evaluation. Media reported that 1 passenger was transported to hospital for "stomach problems". The Q100 suffered substantial damages to its nose, propellers, engines and landing gear. The fuselage was also breached and passengers reported the snow had entered the passenger cabin. The Accident Investigation Board has given permission for the wreckage to be removed and once that is completed, the Nuuk Airport will re-open.
